Deborah A. Casey began her dance training at
the age of nine. She attended many dance conventions and upon her
graduation from high school, attended a two year teacher training
program/course offered by Dance Educators of America in New York
City. Successful completion of the course enabled her to graduate
with high honors and receive a graduate diploma in Ballet and Musical
Theater Arts, thus certified by exam to teach.
She opened her own school in 1974 and continues to study at many
conventions, seminars and workshops held in New York City, Massachusetts,
Connecticut and throughout the United States given by professional
dance organizations such as the Manhattan Dance Project, Canadian
Dance Teachers Association, Dance Educators of America, Dance Olympus,
The Tremaine Dance Experience, Dance Teachers Club of Boston, I
Love Dance, Jeff Shade's Jazz Workshops, L.A. Underground, Professional
Dance Teachers Associations, New York on the Road, The School of
Dance Connecticut, the International Association of Dance Medicine
and Science, The Connecticut Children's Dance Theater Inc. and The
Connecticut Dance Alliance.
She is an active member of the United States Sports Acrobatics
Federation, Professional Dance Teachers Association, International
Tap Association, The International Association of Dance Medicine
and Science and the Connecticut Dance Alliance. She is also a life
time member of Dance Educators of America for completing over twenty
five consecutive years as a member in good standing.
Throughout the years, Deborah and several of her students, faculty
members and teaching assistants attend schools in New York City
and participate in master classes including the Alvin Ailey Dance
Center, Steps, Peri Dance Center, Broadway Dance Center, Phil Blacks
Dance Studio and jazz classes with Luigi.
She attended the summer jazz program for over ten years at the
Hartford School of Ballet, with instructor Rudy D'Angona and attended
jazz classes with Gus Giordano in Evanston, Illinois. During the
summers of 1989 and 1991, she attended an extensive seminar held
in Canada with the Canadian Dance Teachers Association given in
Acrobatics/Acro Sports, Ballet, Modern, Tap, Tap History and Jazz.
In the summer of 1997 she attended a workshop in San Francisco,
California with classes offered in Musical Theater, Tap, Jazz, Hip
Hop, Lyrical, Classical Ballet and Nutrition hosted by New York
on the Road with instructors, Fosse's Chet Walker, Bill Hotaling,
and Finis Jhung.
In the summer of 1999, she attended a dance seminar in Phoenix,
Arizona hosted by the Manhattan Dance Project with Ballet classes
offered by Michael Vernon, Tap with Abron Glover, Musical Theater
Fosse style with Bill Hastings and Jazz and Swing Classes by Bill
Hotaling and Kimberly Lyons. Dance History and Nutrition classes
were offered as well.
During the summers of 2002-2006, and again in 2008 & 2009,
she attended a dance seminar for teachers in New York hosted by
Dance Teacher Magazine/Dance Teacher Summit. Classes were offered
in Yoga, Ballet, Floor Barre Technique, Musical Theater, Injury
Prevention, Lyrical, Creative Movement for Preschoolers, Tap, Managing
your studio, Wellness, Modern, Proper body alignment and turnout
and many others. Instructors included Cathy Roe, Finis Jhung, Michael
Ker, Zena Rommett, Bob Rizzo, Lynn Simonson and Denise Cook. During
the seminar in 2003, Debbie Allen was the keynote speaker.
Deborah was asked to be a guest speaker at a studio owner's forum
round table discussion during the business track session of the
2004 conference. She presented information on "Teaching Student
Teachers/Assistants/Helpers and the value of that status at one's
studio. In February 2005 she was interviewed by Jennifer Branch,
a freelance writer for Dance Teacher Magazine on this presentation
and the article appeared in the May issue. During the 2005 Conference,
Ben Vereen was the keynote speaker. Patrick Swayze was the special
surprise guest and addressed the teachers on the subject of how
important we are in children's lives and later stayed on to sign
autographs.
During the summer of 2007, Deborah attended “The Pulse”
intensive teacher workshop held in NYC by Broadway Dance Center
featuring classes in Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop and
Jazz, with “So You Think You Can Dance” faculty and
judges: Mia Michaels, Shane Sparks, Brian Friedman, Cris Judd, Wade
Robson and Tyce Diorio, as well as many other well known choreographers.
Deborah has judged many regional and national dance, talent and
modeling competitions and pageants for American Miss Talent and
Modeling, Stagestruck Dance Competitions, Dance Capers, The Miss
Wolcott Pageant (preliminary to the Miss America Pageants), Greater
Miss Litchfield County Pageants, Dance Arts Plus, That’s Entertainment,
THS Dance Team and Cheer Competition “Compete for a Cure”
as well as the Southwest Conference Championship Dance Team Competition
in New Milford. For the past several years she has helped emcee
the St. Jude’s Telethon aired on the local cable channel.
Deborah continues to study with many well known choreographers
and instructors to be able to offer her students the very best in
dance education and to keep up with the newest styles and talent
techniques for proper training.
